Authy / Google Authenticator

authy.com

Best for

Two-factor authentication codes

Works on

iOS, Android

Alternatives

Bitwarden TOTP, Microsoft Authenticator

Watch out

Google Authenticator has no cloud backup; consider Authy instead

What It Does

Two-factor authentication (2FA) apps generate time-based one-time passwords (TOTP)—six-digit codes that change every 30 seconds. When you enable 2FA on an account, logging in requires both your password and a code from your authenticator app. This means that even if someone steals your password, they cannot access your account without your physical device. Authy adds encrypted cloud backups and multi-device sync; Google Authenticator is simpler but now supports account transfer and cloud backup.

Setup in 5 Minutes

) or Google Authenticator (from your app store). - Go to the security settings of any account that supports 2FA (Google, GitHub, OpenAI, Anthropic, Discord—nearly all AI tools do). - Select "Authenticator app", scan the QR code with your app, and enter the displayed code to confirm. - The account is now protected with 2FA. Repeat for every account you care about.

Try This

Enable 2FA on your five most important accounts (email, AI tools, cloud storage, code repositories, social media). If you use Authy, enable encrypted backups so you can recover if you lose your phone. Test the login flow on each account to make sure it works smoothly. Time yourself—the extra five seconds per login is worth the protection.

Follow Along

Follow Along — 2FA on 10 Accounts: , enable Authenticator App, and scan the QR code with Authy. - After setup, each account will display backup/recovery codes. Copy these into a secure note in Bitwarden (not a text file on your desktop). - Log out of each account and log back in to verify the 2FA flow works. Time the extra step—it should add fewer than ten seconds. - In Authy, enable Backups and set a strong backup password so you can recover all tokens if you lose your phone.
